ALTERNANTIVE TOURISM IN PELION

ALTERNATIVE TOURISM IN PELION

Poreia Ygeias offers you the opportunity to combine the enjoyment of the bluest of seas and the stay at the finest of Pelion resorts, with the benefits of alternative therapies. Ioannis Dovros, Psychosomatic Health Consultor, expert Personal Trainer for special health conditions, Reflexologist, Group Facilitator specialised in Clinical Psychology (MSc) and Body Worker, with a long experience in the Spa management field at some of the most well-known hotels in Greece, invites you to embark on a holistic journey in the myths of Pelion and the Centaurs.

The word “holistic” stems from the ancient Greek word “olon”, meaning “whole” or “complete”, as in the relevant therapeutic practices the client is treated not only physically, but also sentimentally and mentally. Holistic treatments are widely used and teached in universities around the world. The way they affect the human organism is remarkable and, as research states, they are safe to use in all ages and diseases, as they are free of side-effects and free of counter reactions with other treatments or medicine.

MOTION IN BALANCE WELLNESS RETREAT

Pilates and meridian clearing

We instruct you through a whole-body stretching program combining Pilates and meridian clearing practices. The program takes place under the vigorous sun with the help of balls, rings and other devices. You focus on breath control by activating the diaphragm to improve the activity of the deep muscles. You increase awareness of the neutral position and the range of the pelvic movement to activate the deep muscles. You learn the right connection between the head, neck, spine, chest and pelvis for proper body posture. The program is suitable for all ages, tailored to personal needs, and is great at increasing vitality. No previous experience is required.

Singing Bowl Mindfullness

We guide you into the meditative experience of the Tibetan singing bowls, where the vibrations stir the alpha and theta brain waves and help the body enter a state of deep serenity. You feel the self-healing forces of the body activated by the impact of yoga nidra and the effect of the sounds.

NLP interventions

NLP interventions and guided visualization are softly integrated in the singing bowls mindfullness sessions. You get in touch with the true needs of your organism as a whole, awakening your inner wisdom that makes deep and positive change sustainable. You explore psychosomatic symptoms and listen to their hidden healing message from a holistic perspective. Neuro-lingustic programming is applied in a group setting to compliment change in any area of your life, relationships, career, health, or spirituality. Systemic family or group constellations may be offered to enable you towards a positive transformation in your life.

ZhiNeng QiGong sessions

We offer you a series of both dynamic and static QiGong, combining motion sequences as well as static healing postures. You become familiar with deep meditation techniques that put the self in the centre. You enact ZhiNeng QiGong, a type of moving meditation that puts the same emphasis on body and mind, activates the energy channels of the body, nourishes the organs and body systems and increases mental and physical consciousness. Zhineng QiGong combines "Qi" the energy of life, "Gong" daily effort and practice, “Zhi” wisdom and intelligence, and “Neng” ability in all its aspects.

Story telling

We narrate a series of specially selected local mythology and traditional stories in an inspiring environment. You re-connect with the creative and symbolic right brain side to balance out the rational and logical left side.

Wellness plan

It is also possible to chart a personalized wellness plan, involving holistic bodywork, reflexology, cranio-sacral therapy and other sessions, offered in the free time.

Relation to nature

The area offers a range of nature activities such as mountain hiking, canoeing, kayaking and swimming etc.

PLACE AND HISTORY

Damouchari is the only natural port of Pelion and a place with special energy. It was first spotted by the Venetians during the medieval period, when Venice dominated the entire Mediterranean Sea and coast. Damouchari was originally a castle (ruins of which are still there at the village), built as a refuelling station and a fortress that protected the Venetians from the frequent pirate raids of that time. Over the years, two stories have survived and prevailed, to explain the origin of the name "Damouchari", a historical one and a romantic one.

  1. a) It is said that the Venetian sailors and residents were heading to Damouhari's safe castle every time the pirates tried to attack them. Hidden inside the castle, they called on the Virgin Mary to protect them from danger and give them strength for the battle. They prayed to her, saying, “da mi (Latin) charin (Greek)” meaning “give me favour." Over time the phrase “da mi charin” remained as "Damouchari".
  2. b) Captain Apostolos Vainopoulos was a local merchant from Pelion, travelled to Europe and specifically to Romania, met and fell in love with Cleopatra, a cosmopolitan countess. From the nobility of Bucharest he brought her to the peaceful port of Damouchari, dedicating the whole village to her. The loneliness she felt due to the distance from her family and the frequent absence of her beloved captain, led to her death and the early end of a great love. Since then, the locals have named the village "Damouchari" from the phrase "d'amour (French) charin (Greek)" meaning "for the sake of love".

Accomodation is provided at Damouchari Hotel with the wonderful garden and the refreshing swimming pool (http://www.damouchari.gr).

The origin of the Centaurs is dark. An interpretation that seems reasonable is that they were a wild breed of people who lived in the mountains of Thessaly. They were initially engaged in riding and hunting bulls and other beasts. A myth reports that a king of the area had instructed these horsemen to bring back the oxen or bulls that had escaped. The horsemen then led the lost animals back to the grasslands by piercing them with the “vucentro” (long stick with a sharp edge to disturb the cattle and guide them). Thus, the etymology of the word Centaur can be explained as the “centron” + “taurus” (spike + bull).
Centaur Chiron, described as “righteous” by Homer and “wise” by Pindar, was the most sensible centaur, the son of Oceana Filyra and Saturn. He was particularly known for his wisdom and knowledge. He was polite and kind, unlike some of the other fierce centaurs. He taught medicine to many and the science of medicine (especially surgery) and hunting for Apollo's son, Asclepius. Chiron educated Achilles and made him an expert in the use of drugs and weapons. He also guided Jason, the leader of the legendary Argonaut Expedition.

Reflexology is an ancient natural holistic approach. It has been used in China, Egypt and Greece (Hippocratic meridians). It is based on the existence of reflex points on the soles, the palms and other specific spots of the body that correspond to an organ or body function. These spots are systematically stimulated though special pressures leading to the activation of the healing forces of the body and resulting in the relaxation and harmony of the organism.

Through the activation of the body’s self-healing capability, Reflexology contributes to the relief of anxiety and other psychogenic problems, such as headaches, migraines, respiratory problems, colds, extreme fatigue, rhinitis,  digestive disorders etc. Reflexology presents no counter-effects and is suitable for all, except pregnant women in the 1st-3rd month of pregnancy.

Holistic wellness techniques are healing methods widely used in both healthy people and patients. They have been used by ancient Greeks (Hippocrates) it as early as 430 B.C. There are historical reports indicating that holistic wellness techniques were used in India and China 5000 years ago. Their basic principle is the kneading of the soft tissues of the body with a beneficial aim. An effective holistic treatment results in the improvement of blood circulation in muscles and soft tissues. While cleaning the waste products, applying presure on the muscles allows the entrance of more nutrients in them. It offers a sense of relaxation and rejuvenation.

Oriental stretching techniques include a variety of treatments and hand-pressure techniques from the east. Oriental stretching techniques use a variety of stretching, mobilization and thumb specific meridian points. The aim is to provide the greatest possible release, relaxation and well being by improving the physical, mental and energy levels. They ensure deep relaxation and release tension and chronic stress. These are responsible for many 'psychosomatic' malfunctions.

The specialized head and neck relaxation releases the accumulated tension in the head and neck and prevents headaches, migraines. In addition, it removes the fatigue of the person offering more fresh and youthful looks.

The face reflexology is a modern method, which has been developed for over a long period of 25 survey years. The method uses thumb techniques for nerve endings and meridians. It ensures deep serenity and relief.

These technique combine reflexology with the technique of singing bowls relaxation. The singing bowls (also called “sound-bowls”) help the person find harmony, because of sounds and vibrations. The sound is a result of a cyclical movement of a wooden stick which rhythmically touches the thibetan metal bowl. Researches have found that the singing bowls produce a measurable bowl vibration which is equivalent to the alpha and theta waves generated by the brain. These waves slow down brain activity so that we can have better concentration and focus. So the combination of the beneficial effects of reflexology and singing bowls give the individual a unique experience of relaxation and wellness.

After a personal interview, the therapist chooses among a variety of techniques and means that are used to boost, diffuse or ease the unbalanced energy blocked in several areas of the body. Cloths, oils and powders are used for this purpose. Hippocratic relaxation technique is described in detail in the works of Galinos and is considered to be vital in the prevention of many diseases.

The purpose of cranial treatment is to balance the cranial-rhythm of the body, that is, the rate at which cerebrospinal fluid moves from the brain to the spine. The movement of this fluid gives all the commands to the central nervous system to function, and its unimpeded flow is vital to ensure good health. By shaking hands with the cranium-like rhythm and exercising very mild pressures, the rhythm returns to balance.

Reiki is a method that began from Japan and has beneficial effects on the physical well-being. This method uses the touch of hands to channel energy that exists in the universe. The Reiki method is carried out by putting the hands on various parts of the body of the receptor. It restores energy blockages where they exist. Reiki complements any medical treatment, medication, psychological therapy or alternative therapy. It helps recovery, rehabilitation and improvement and is suitable for all, regardless of age.

It is a whole-body stretching program combined with subtle physical exercise that will take place under the sun. The program is suitable for all ages, adaptable to the customer’s needs, and forms a mixture of Yoga, Pilates and Tai Chi practices, ideal for a vitality rise. It is also possible to chart a personal training program as well as a complete personalized wellness plan.
